We started remodeling our home soon after we bought it in the summer of 2014. I’ve always wanted my home to have lots of color and look like it was out of a magazine! I would look at tons of Home Interior magazines to try and get an idea of how I wanted our home to look and feel. I had decided on a dark grey color for the walls, then I would add pops or red color and white to add dimension. Well, I never did get that look to come together in real life like I had it pictured in my head. But, I didn’t want to spend the money on a ton of new things. So, after 7 years of living with the grey colored walls, I decided it was time for a change!
I decided one day that I was ready for a brighter feel in the living room. And I was going to do it without spending a fortune.
First, before getting started, I removed pictures and decode from the walls and filled in nail holes. You can use any wood filler like this one here. It dries fast and just sand off the extra to make it smooth. I also removed the outlet covers. I didn’t tape anything off, because I used white against white. However, if I was using a different color paint, I would have done that as well.
Then, I moved everything to the center of the room. This seemed like the easiest option since I was trying to get it done before my husband came home from work!
I used this paint from Dutch Boy and I really like it in White 003W. We also wanted to get Semi-gloss because it is easier to wipe down fingerprints and messy spots for messy little hands. Previously, I used a Satin finish with the grey paint, and I felt like it was not easy to clean. So I am very happy with the Semi-gloss finish.
I had to use several coats of paint to get the grey to stop bleeding through. This was after the first coat.
I like to use the cheap brush and rollers, because then I don’t feel so bad throwing them out after one use!
I also had plenty of helpers! I’m not usually the kind of mother that just lets their kids help with messy jobs and doesn’t stress every second that they’re helping. And, I definitely was stressing while they painted the whole time! But, I knew it was good for them to be involved and made things fun for them too while mom was busy most of the day!
So after about the fourth coat of paint (which, my husband says I put paint on too thin), I finally finished the next day. However, I had to wait almost a week to but things back together, because we had to finish so trim work and get all the little details finished.
Wreaths are from Hobby Lobby
You can find them here.
Shutters were thrifted. I then brightened them up with White Rustoleum spray paint.
Lantern was thrifted.
Lamps and Shades are from Meijer.
I’m absolutely loving the bright feeling this room gives!
I also love our couch we found at a local furniture store. It has a polyester fabric, so it looks like a leather couch without that cold touch from actual leather! Funny thing is, after years of having this couch, we finally decided to order the matching loveseat a few months ago. Not thinking, ordering during a pandemic makes things a little slower these days. So, we are going on 5 months of waiting for it to come in…. It will get here, ONE DAY!
This longhorn skull actually came from a client from my husbands brother (I believe, sometimes I’m not as thorough with details like my hubby). I think it fits perfectly with the color and Farmhouse theme I was going for.
I’m a huge fan of Hobby Lobby! So most of my signs come from there! As well as the greenery pictured here. But these cute little lantern houses came from a sweet friend and I just love how they look in this room!
This rug is my favorite piece! I love that it’s not a solid color of white. It hides spots well and fits perfectly in this space. This is the 7’10″x10’ rug. And you can find it here. I love that it didn’t break the bank for this size!
Whether you’re looking to just brighten up a space in your home or going all out with a total transformation, I hope this inspires you in a way that helps you make your home yours! It doesn’t have to match that Picture in that magazine you have always pictured in your mind!
I’d love to see your transformations too!
